Wool Patterns
Wool is one of the most durable and long-lasting natural fibers that exists. Felted 100% wool fabric is a wonderful material for appliqué because there's no need to turn down the edges as you sew—simply use a blanket stitch or similar stitch around the edges. The edges won't fray or tear, and there's less need for embroidery hoops or fabric stabilizers.
Many wool appliqué patterns feature muted, neutral colors and simple shapes inspired by traditional patterns or motifs. They are designed to evoke feelings of warm nostalgia and celebrate historical American art forms. This is known as the 'primitive' style of wool appliqué. Modern wool appliqué can also feature vivid, bright hand dyed wool in any shape or pattern you can imagine! No matter your favorite style of wool appliqué patterns, you're sure to find one that suits your taste.

Did you know? Modern penny mats are inspired by Civil War era rugs designed by thrifty homemakers. These quilters would collect scraps of worn-out wool fabric or clothing. Then they'd use coins as templates to trace perfect round shapes on their material, hence the name 'penny rug'. Once they had collected enough scraps, they would layer the pieces in concentric circles and sew them onto plain fabric backings with a blanket stitch. Though modern wool appliqué is now available in every imaginable color, shape, or stitch, many rustic or 'primitive' wool applique patterns still exist that pay tribute to the art's traditional roots.
